Assurant colleagues were in attendance at the recent National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) Driving Automotive event, which took place at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Key observations included the dynamic transformation of the automotive landscape with new entrants such as Skywell, Lotus, Xpeng, and Leapmotor revealing their cutting-edge vehicles; highlighting the growing presence of innovative brands reshaping the industry.

A recurring theme throughout the day was the rapid speed-to-market of these new players. Unlike traditional automotive manufacturers, many of these entrants operate as technology companies first and foremost. Their agility and tech-driven approach, wireless updates and agility in manufacturing allows them to quickly adapt to consumer demands, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) space, where innovation and speed are critical.

They weren’t the only brands showcasing their commitment to technology and design. BYD, a global leader in EVs, shared its ambitious growth plans for 2025, emphasising the UK as a key market. Similarly, Lotus, Leapmotor, Skywell, and Chang’an all underlined their strategies for expanding their presence in the UK market. These brands are focusing on providing cutting-edge vehicles tailored to the needs of UK consumers, reflecting the region’s significance in the global EV market.

Interestingly, discussions throughout the day pointed to a notable potential shift in consumer sentiment. As loyalty to traditional automotive brands is tested—especially in the EV segment—new entrants are capturing the attention of UK buyers. With their emphasis on innovation, affordability, and sustainability, these brands are well-positioned to challenge established manufacturers and reshape the competitive landscape.

The NFDA Driving Automotive event underscored that the future of mobility in the UK is no longer solely in the hands of the “legacy OEMs”. Instead, a new wave of tech-driven brands is redefining the market with speed, vision, and a focus on what consumers truly want. The UK’s appetite for EV innovation is growing, and these brands are more than ready to deliver.

We look forward to seeing how this plays our over the next 12 months.
